Township Histories - Brief histories of the towns in De Kalb County, Indiana. These vary in length and details given. Here is an example:

The pioneers of Butler Township were Peter Fair and his sons Charles and Abraham, all of whom are dead; Charles Crouse, George De Long, and the Surfaces; Andrew and his sons Jacob and John. The date of their settlement is 1835, although they had come in with a wagon and two span of horses the fall previously, and built their cabins. The same year, the Holbrooks „ Lewis and Lyman „ Joseph Stroup, and Henry and Michael Miller moved into the township. In the spring of 1836, the population was increased by the arrival of William Surface, John Gregg, a present resident, and James Bell. Sanford Bassett, now of Waterloo, came to the township in 1838 and John Noel, John C. Clark, John Embry and Henry Fair in 1839. George Ensley, of Auburn, settled in Butler in 1841. The Clarks were early settlers. Isaac and Stephen were Methodist preachers, and Orrin, present Trustee of Keyser, has long been known as a prominent and influential townsman. Among other settlers who have grown up amidst the hardships of the past, are the Moodys, Works, Ensleys and Hoffmans.

The first justice was William Day, and George Ensley was the next. In 1841, the first church built in the county was put up on the farm of Robert Work, and yet stands on the hill. It was built by the Methodist Episcopal denomination. A log church building was erected near the same site at an early day by the Luthrans. The first Sabbath school was organized by O. C. Clark, then a young man.

The organization of Butler as a civil township, dates from September 5, 1837, when it was six miles square. In 1876, Keyser Township was formed by taking two tiers of sections from the northern part of Butler, and a like number from the southern part of Richland.

The land is generally rich; water abundant, and timber being at hand, saw-mills were built, and early settlers erected good houses. Good frame school houses were erected over twenty years ago, and in most cases, they have beren replaced by handsome brick buildings. As an exceptional case, it is remarked that John R. Moody, Thomas Hall and others in the neighborhood, desiring better educational facilities by private subscription put up a schoolhouse in the southeast corner of the township. The farmers of Butler enjoy the advantages of four grain markets: Cedar Creek, on the Eel River road, St. John's and New Era, on the Saginaw, and Garrett on the Baltimore road. The township is advancing to the front as an agricultural and stock-raising section, and natural features, once gloomy and repellent, tend later to develop the farms and enrich their owners.
