Pages from the Boston Book of Possessions ($5 per sheet of two pages) There is only ONE MAP, titled Map A or No. 1. All the other items listed are for written information regarding ownership.

Information about Boston landowners from the Second Report of the Record Commissioners of the City of Boston; (second part), containing The Book of Possessions. Second Edition. Published in Boston in 1882. Each property listed is keyed to the map which is listed below.

The following is quoted from the book:

INTRODUCTION

When the first edition of this book was prepared, the writer furnished a sketch of such facts as were obtainable in regard to its history and probable authorship. The suggestion was then made that this list of land-owners was made in 1652, after the discharge of William Aspinwall from the post of Recorder of Suffolk County. Various indications favored this surmise, but it becomes entirely untenable in view of the fact that some of the entries are evidently in the handwriting of Aspinwall. This fact was proved by Uriel H. Crocker, Esq., who published three fac-similes of Aspinwall's signature, two from other sources and one from this book, page 33. The true date and author are matters to be considered later.

In regard to the 'Book' the following testimony is interesting. It is on a slip of paper, in the library of the Massachusetts Historical Society, in a volume entitled "Letters and Papers, Boston, 1631-1783," in cabinet 61, H.

"These may Certify whome it may Concern, That when I came first into the office of Clerk of the County Court of Suffolk in the year 1672 I there found a Booke Entituled on the Cover Possessions of the Inhabitants of Boston, which I many times lookt into and extracted several things out of it at the desire of particular persons, but alwaies was in doubt of the validity of it as a Record. And it remained in the office at the time when I was dismissed." (signed) Asa. Addington."

Succeeding generations, however, have placed a higher value on this book, and it is now recognized as the foundation of the title of most of the real estate in the old portion of the city. ...

From the 1852 Map of the Vicinity of Boston, from Original Surveys by F. G. Sidney, C.E., published in 1852.

This map covers these towns: Lexington, Woburn, Stoneham, Melrose, Saugus, Lynn, Swampscott, Nahant, Winthrop, North Chelsea (now Revere), Medford, South Reading, Cambridge, West Cambridge, Newton, Watertown, Brighton, Brookline, Roxbury, West Roxbury, Milton, Quincy, Winchester, Dorchester.

This map shows the family name on most property, except where it was already so thickled settled that it was not possible to put the homeowner's name on every house (for instance, all of Boston, central villages of Cambridge, Melrose, Roxbury, Lynn, and Salem harbor.)

Specify one town and we will send you a photocopy of the section of the map that includes that town. $5 per photocopy.

OR purchase a 36 by 36 inch copy of the entire map for $29.00.

From the 1858 Wall Map of Barnstable, Dukes (Martha's Vineyard) and Nantucket Counties, published by Henry E. Walling in 1858.

This map covers all of the three counties, including the Elizabeth Islands. It appears to have a family name for every house on the map. The original size was about 62 inches by 62 inches, and it is reprinted at about 36 inches by 36 inches, so the print is VERY SMALL. However, it can be read with a loupe or magnifying glass. Reprinted in black ink on white paper. $29.00.

Click here to read a sample of the information given on the 1858 Wall Map (consisting of the names given in the Provincetown Business Directory listing.)
